Grand Seiko just released the new SBGN009, a watch designed to honor 50 years of quartz watches. As you already know, Seiko released the first quartz wristwatch, the Astron, in 1969, starting an horological revolution that continues to this day.
The blue dial with gold accents features Seiko’s quartz crystal emblems. The gold fourth hand you see here is the GMT hand, which allows the wearer to track a second time zone.
That’s because it’s powered by the new 9F86 movement, the first of the legendary 9F family to feature a GMT complication and independent hour hand. This movement is accurate to just 10 seconds per year.
Each watch receives relatively subtle (insofar as it is only on the back of the watch) limited edition branding on the back. The SBGN009 is a limited edition of 2019 pieces.
